The Daytona Supercross by Honda is always one of the most special events of the year. It’s not just a supercross race – it’s an ‘event’. Almost every aspect of the event is unique, or historic. Or both. The supercross race is just part of the experience that is called “Bike Week”. Days and days of motorcycle-related things happening all over Daytona Beach and at the Daytona International Speedway.

The supercross race itself – unique and historic in that it’s held at the Daytona International Speedway (you’ll have to visit the facility to believe how big it is and how much there is to see!) … and add in the fact that the Daytona supercross track is the longest, and roughest of the season. And that there has been motorcycling racing at Daytona International Speedway since 1961, and Daytona Beach itself (literally on the beach) since 1937.
Let’s focus on the race – Marvin Musquin won his first ever 250 Supercross in America. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. And Ryan Villopoto not only won the Main Event in the 450 SX class, he now takes over the points lead from Davi Millsaps, by two points, as the series heads to Indy this weekend at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Ryan Villopoto “We’re in a good place. The track was so tough … , you just had to keep on your toes and be ready for anything. We didn’t expect to be back in the points lead this fast, but from here we will try to keep the wins coming. Daytona is a unique place to race. To win it is pretty awesome. It’s not like any other racing. If you can get a win here, it shows you are definitely one of the best. It feels really good. There’s still a lot of racing left and we have to keep focused and keep pushing forward.”
Marvin Musquin “Obviously I had a lot of fun riding this track. I knew everyone was going to be fast so I stayed calm out front and tried to have fun. I am so happy to get this win and to also gain more confidence knowing that I was pulling away from them each lap. I was having so much fun playing with the track. I don’t want to say it was easy – I just had so much fun!”

2nd in the 450 class, Ryan Dungey “It’s pretty rough track tonight. Luckily, we got my suspension dialed in after practice and my bike worked really well. I got off to a great start and was able to put myself in a good position early on. I tried to close that gap on Villopoto as much as I could each lap, but he was riding a good race. It feels great to get back up on the podium.”
3rd place in the 450 class Justin Barcia “I am happy with how tonight went and love being up on the podium. I want to win, but both Ryans were riding really good, so I’m happy just to be up here with them. The track was brutal. When I was in the 250 class it was always pretty hard here at Daytona, but on the 450 this was definitely tough. It felt like an outdoor race. I rode the best I could and had a lot of fun.”
Eli Tomac “I am really pleased with how tonight went here at Daytona. I finally rode like I know how to and felt really comfortable on the bike. I didn’t get the best start but was able to relax and make the passes I needed to. I’m learning a lot this time on the 450 and definitely feel like I know what it takes to ride at this level. We all kind of got sandwiched on the start and I had to fight through that. I fell into like eighth or ninth place and then just told myself to relax and let the race come to me. One by one I was making passes and we got up to fourth place. I’m really pleased with that. This time on the 450 is going really well for me. I guess the next step is get up on the box now.”
Chad Reed “On paper that was not the result I was hoping for but there were still plenty of positives. The bike was fast and it felt good to be able to get back up, race hard and move up through the order in both my heat and the main. It was crazy out there, the track was gnarly and the ruts just got deeper, every lap there was someone off the track. I felt good and I was competitive, … we will take a lot out of this race.”
James Stewart “All day long, I felt pretty good. I qualified second in practice and I was happy about how I rode in my heat race. But then I made a pretty significant change with the tire between the heat race and the Main Event and I completely went the wrong way. In the start of the Main, I got kind of cross-rutted coming out of the gate, but I was able to sneak around the inside and came out fourth or fifth. But I struggled from lap one to lap 20. The Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 worked great, I just picked the wrong tire and that was that. But we’ll be back. I want to thank the Yoshimura Suzuki team, the last four races have been really good for us and I hate it that we got these results because of a decision that I made. I felt great going into the race and my endurance was good. But we’ll be back, there’s still a lot to fight for this year and we’ll get ‘em at Indy.”
Trey Canard “It has been a rough couple of weeks for me. I gave all my effort but know that I have some things I need to work on. I’m happy to be healthy and moving onto the next race.”
Wil Hahn 250 East series points leader “I am satisfied with a second this weekend. The heat win really helped my confidence heading into the night, so that was cool. I got a fourth-place start in the main and just tried to stay consistent and capitalize on any mistakes that were made in front of me. I wanted to win but by the time I got into second Marvin Musquin was gone. I’m happy for him. It’s his first win and that’s special.”
Dean Wilson “I felt great all day. I was fast in practice, but never quite felt the same once the lights came on for the night show. After I came up short in one rhythm section, I just tried to regroup and get through the race. The track was very difficult.”
