Ryan Dungey wins 450 class as AMA National Motocross goes to Muddy Creek MX in Tennessee. Marvin Musquin victorious in 250 class
Ryan Dungey wins 450 class
Marvin Musquin takes home top prize in the 250 class
The defending Champions are Blake Baggett (250 class) and Ryan Dungey (450 class). But after last week’s race in Colorado, it’s Kenny Roczen and Ryan Villopoto as the series points leaders coming into Tennessee.
In 250 Qualifying, the quickest lap was turned in by Ken Roczen – 2 minutes 1 second. Then Eli Tomac next at 2:02, Blake Baggett 2:03, Zach Osborne 2:03:63. The rest of the top ten Marvin Musquin, Jeremy Martin, Dominic Izzi, Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb, and Martin Davalos (2:06). 73 riders are attempting to qualify.
In 450 Qualifying, the names of the top two quickest laps might surprise you – Josh Grant on the Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha first at 2 minutes 4 seconds, and Rockstar World Suzuki’s Clement Desalle second at 2 minutes 5 seconds. Then Justin Barcia third at 2:05:45, Ryan Dungey 2:06, Ryan Villopoto 2:07:04, Trey Canard 2:07:09, Ryan Sipes, Tyla Rattray, Broc Tickle and Andrew Short round out the top ten . 77 riders are attempting to qualify. James Stewart 17th, and Chad Reed 18th, both at 2:09.
450 Moto 1 – it’s Ryan Villopoto with the early lead … but halfway thru the first lap it’s Justin Barcia passing RV for the lead … then towards the end of the first lap RV passes Barcia back for the lead.
At the end of the first lap – Villopoto, Barcia, Trey Canard, Mike Alessi, James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, Ryan Sipes, Justin Brayton, Clement Desalle, and Phil Nicoletti tenth.
A few moments later … Trey Canard crashes, and, comes around slowly, … pulling into the mechanics area.
This race, as all the others, will go 30 minutes plus two laps. The top riders have dropped their lap times to under 2 minutes – Villopoto runs one lap at 1 minute 58 seconds.
15 minutes into this race (7 laps), it’s Ryan Villopoto leading, Justin Barcia second, Ryan Dungey has moved into third, James Stewart is fourth. Clement Desalle 7th, Josh Grant 10th, Chad Reed 14th.
With just two laps to go, Villopoto with an almost ten second lead over Barcia, Dungey third, Stewart fourth, and Belgian Clement Desalle (number 925) up to fifth.
Ryan Villopoto has done it again – he wins this moto – it’s his fifth moto win in a row! 17 laps. Every moto of the season so far! Justin Barcia second, Ryan Dungey third, James Stewart fourth, and Clement Desalle fifth. Josh Grant seventh, Tyla Rattray 11th, Chad Reed 15th, Trey Canard comes back onto the track and finishes 29th.
250 Moto 1 – the early leader is Zach Osborne (338). But at the end of the first lap – it’s Cooper Webb (number 175 Yamaha) with the lead! Then it’s series points leader Ken Roczen, Zach Osborne, Marvin Musquin, Jason Anderson, Blake Baggett, Jeremy Martin, and Joey Savatgy. This is Cooper Webb’s third ever professional race …
At the end of lap two, Kenny Roczen has passed Cooper Webb for the lead. So it’s Roczen, Webb, Osborne, Musquin, Baggett, Anderson, Martin, … and Eli Tomac is 11th.
The fast guys find a way to get up near the front. As they hit the 15 minute mark (7 laps), it’s Kenny Roczen with the lead, Red Bull KTM teammate Marvin Musquin into second. Both of them are former FIM World MX 2 Motocross Champions (Marvin 2009, 2010, Ken 2011). Third is Blake Baggett, fourth Eli Tomac, and fifth Zach Osborne.
Lap 12, with Ken Roczen leading Marvin Musquin by 8 seconds, Eli Tomac hits the dirt. So at the end of lap 12, it’s Roczen, Musquin, Blake Baggett with his best ride of the season, and fourth is … ‘rookie’ Cooper Webb.
Ken Roczen wins this 17 lap moto! Marvin Musquin second! Third goes to Blake Baggett. Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac have a nice battle for fourth, with Tomac making the pass and taking fourth at the end, Webb finishes fifth. Zach Osborne sixth.
450 Moto 2 – Justin Barcia with the holeshot! There is a crash in the first corner, involves Tyla Rattray and Clement Desalle. Mid-way thru the first lap – Villopoto crashes.
At the end of the first lap – it’s Justin Barcia first, Ryan Dungey is second, and James Stewart third. Then M Alessi, Kevin Strijbos (Rockstar World Suzuki), Malcolm Stewart, Trey Canard, Josh Grant, Jake Weimer, and Andrew Short round out the top ten. Chad Reed is 11th, and Ryan Villopoto comes around … 16th. Clement Desalle 24th.
Five laps into this race, it’s Justin Barcia leading Ryan Dungey by under 2 seconds. Third now is Mike Alessi, then it’s James Stewart, Trey Canard, Kevin Strijbos, … and Ryan Villopoto!
15 minutes (7 laps) into this race, it’s Justin Barcia leading, Ryan Dungey second, Mike Alessi third, Trey Canard, James Stewart, and Ryan Villopoto.
Villopoto continues his charge – he’s moved around Stewart and into fifth. On lap ten he passes Canard to take over fourth.
Will Villopoto make it interesting? Will Barcia win the overall? How about Dungey?
25 minutes into this race – Ryan Dungey has passed Barcia for the lead! And Villopoto has overtaken Mike Alessi to move into third!
Lap 13 – Villopoto makes a mistake. It’s Dungey, Barcia, Canard, Alessi, Villopoto, Stewart, and Strijbos. Desalle ninth. Reed 13th.
The finish sees Ryan Dungey take the win, and the overall victory! Justin Barcia takes second in this moto, and second overall on the day. Canard finishes third in this moto, Villopoto finishes fourth. (Results will be below.)
250 Moto 2 – it’s Eli Tomac with the holeshot! Marvin Musquin is second, followed by Zach Osborne. Ken Roczen is … sixth. Blake Baggett is eighth. The track is drying out, and, has some ruts in places.
Lap 3 – Ken Roczen takes a fall. It’s Eli Tomac with the lead, Marvin Musquin in second, and Zach Osborne third. Then Justin Bogle, Blake Baggett, and Roczen.
Eli Tomac is doing just like he did last week – dominating moto 2. He’s leading, Marvin Musquin is second … and if positions hold, Marvin would get the overall with a 2/2 day! Third is Zach Osborne, fourth is Blake Baggett, fifth is Justin Bogle, and sixth belongs to Ken Roczen.
10 laps in, Roczen has moved past both Bogle & Baggett and into fourth. It’s Tomac, Musquin, Osborne, Roczen, Baggett, and Bogle.
If they stay the way they are, Musquin will get the overall victory. If Roczen passes Osborne, then he (Roczen) will get the overall.
Lap 13 – Roczen has passed Osborne. Lap 15 – Baggett has gone by Roczen. It’s Tomac, Musquin, Baggett, Roczen, and Osborne to five. If they stay this way, Marvin Musquin will get the overall win!
After 17 laps, it’s Tomac with the moto victory, Marvin Musquin is second, and scores the overall win! Third is Baggett, fourth is Roczen, then Osborne, Bogle, Anderson, Davalos, Wharton, and J Martin. (Results will be below.)

After the race, Red Bull KTM teammates Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin had this to say:
Ryan Dungey “It feels great to get a win here. The whole team has been working really hard each day to constantly make improvements. I really enjoyed this track today and am glad I was able to put everything together to finally get the results we are aiming for.”
Marvin Musquin “This track really worked for me. It’s technical and rutted and just what I like. I just pinned it the first few laps of the second moto to try and gap the field. I knew I needed to finish second to get the overall and I was determined to not let them catch me. I am so thankful to my team for building me a great bike that helped me get a win.”
