2011 BMW X3 fills out, adds a dash of sport

Behold the 2011 BMW X3. It’s longer, wider and taller than its predecessors, but you’d be forgiven for thinking it looks remarkably similar to the last X3.

Naturally, BMW’s twin-kidney grille is affixed up front, but like the new 5 and 7 Series, it’s more upright and slightly larger than before. The lower air dam is slightly chiseled while staying true to BMW’s recent organic shapes, and the wider headlamps come equipped with “Corona Rings” and optional Xenon bulbs.

Viewed in profile, the outgoing X3′s slab sides have been augmented with a character line running aft of the front wheels and kicking up over the rear fenders, while an upswept D-pillar compliments the redesigned LED taillamps and subtle crease over the rear-mounted Roundel. All in, the new X3 (F25) is half an inch taller, 3.36 inches longer and 1.1 inches wider with a half-inch increase in ground clearance. In keeping with tradition, it’s a “lifestyle” vehicle first with no pretenses of hardcore off-roading.

Like the outside, the interior is a subtle evolution of its forebear, with a staid German style balancing functionality and form. The joystick-style transmission lever carries over from BMW’s most recent models, along with an 8.8-inch iDrive-controlled screen and a redesigned steering wheel with aluminum accents on the paddle shifters and lower spoke. With the rear seats set in place, rear cargo volume comes in at 19 cubic feet, growing to 56.6 cubes with the 60:40 rear seats folded flat.

The entry-level X3 xDrive28i comes equipped with BMW’s naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline six rated at 240 horsepower and 230 pound-feet of torque, allowing BMW’s best-selling ‘ute to sprint to 60 in 6.7 seconds – about a half second quicker than the outgoing model. Step up for the X3 xDrive35i and you’re basking in 300 hp and 300 lb-ft provided by BMW’s new single-turbo N55 inline-six. The 0-60 run clocks in at a claimed 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 150 mph when kitted out with the optional Sport package.

Channeling that power to the ground is a standard eight-speed automatic gearbox with wider spreads and taller cruising gears to keep fuel economy in check, while standard all-wheel drive splits torque 40:60 front-to-rear thanks to an electronically controlled multi-disc diff and a host of other gizmos.

The MacPherson front struts have been redeveloped along with the multi-link rear suspension, while an optional electronic damping control adapts to the road and driver inputs. Normal, Sport and Sport Plus modes are mounted next to the gear selector, tweaking throttle response, transmission shifts, steering assist, DSC settings and suspension firmness.

The newest electronic system for the X3 is the Performance Control feature, which shuffles 80 percent of the torque to the rear under steady-state throttle. Like Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, the BMW’s system brakes the inside rear wheel and powers the outside roller to curb understeer and provide a more neutral driving feeling.

Production of the X3 will remain at BMW’s Spartanburg, SC plant and sales are set to begin towards the end of the year. Hit the jump for the full details and check out the positively massive gallery of images below.

BMW Frozen Gray M3 paint a pain, owners must sign agreement about its care?

If you were one of the 30 Bimmerphiles to snag a 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupe last month, expect to fill out another round of paperwork before you take delivery of your new matte gray baby.

BMW is apparently requiring all owners to sign a “maintenance agreement” that insists the M3 is never polished or waxed, ran through an automatic car wash or even strongly rubbed. Additionally, BMW politely asks that you immediately remove bugs, bird droppings, tree sap and fuel spills with a soft sponge, and naturally, dealers are more than willing to sell you appropriate products for maintaining the matte finish.

According to enthusiast site Bimmerfest, BMW explicitly states the M3′s warranty won’t cover any damage due to owner neglect and it notes that all exterior repairs must be performed by a BMW-authorized shop. What’s more, if you don’t sign the agreement, no Frozen Grey M3 for you. That’s a lot of disclaimers. All of which could be easily solved for less if you simply went down to your local custom vinyl shop and wrapped your (decidedly less expensive) standard M3 in a 3M coating. But how do you put a price on exclusivity?

Video: BMW teases 1 Series M Coupe [*UPDATED]

BMW 1 Series M Coupe – Click above to view the video after the jump

We’ve waited a long time for this. And not just for the official name. BMW has released the first teaser video of its upcoming 1 Series M Coupe and “excited” doesn’t begin to describe how we’re feeling.

The video after the jump is devoid of hard details, but it confirms what we’ve seen in countless spy shots and the rumors that have made the rounds for nearly a year.

Early reports indicate that the twin-turbocharged inline-six (N54) in the standard 135i will be upgraded to 335 horsepower, with the M Coupe’s newfound grunt channeled through a six-speed dual-clutch manual gearbox and down to the rear wheels via a torque-vectoring M rear differential. The results are a 0-60 time of around 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Naturally, firmer springs, dampers and bushings are part of the package, along with lightweight 18-inch wheels and a full body kit consisting of a new fascia, flared wheel arches, larger side sills, rear diffuser and a small spoiler. Being an M-fettled product, expect a quad-tipped exhaust to reside out back and – judging by previous spy shots and the official video – BMW’s trademark fender vents.

BMW kindly requests you to register at M-Power.com for more details and to sign up for an exclusive test drive. The rub: it’s only open to “German and Austrian” drivers. Here’s hoping that unjust regionalism doesn’t extend to sales when the 1 Series M Coupe hit dealers in the second quarter of 2011.

Spy Shots: 2012 BMW M6 ready to tackle the ‘Ring

June 21st, 2010

For the last few months, there’s been a barrage of BMW 6 Series spy shots. But with the coupe and convertible performing a slow striptease in Germany, one model has been noticeably absent: the next-generation M6.

Caught testing this morning outside the Nurburgring, BMW’s high-po coupe differs from its staid siblings with upgraded wheels, drilled brake rotors and the standard M-style quad exhausts. The front bumper also benefits from a slight reworking when compared to the standard 6 Series, with an enlarged lower air dam and something we haven’t seen on previous prototypes: a strip of LED turn signal indicators just below the restyled headlamps.

If the 2012 M6 is anything like its predecessors, it’s safe to assume that the all-new M5′s powerplant will carry over to the coupe and convertible models. If that’s the case, the next M6 will be packing a modified version of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 currently fitted to the X5 M and X6 M, with output somewhere north of 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. All signs point to a Paris Motor Show debut for the revised 6 Series, so we’d expect the M6 to debut early next year and go on sale as a 2012 model.

BMW releases 2011 M3 Frozen Gray Coupe for the U.S.

June 17th, 2010

With all the limited-edition love available across the pond, it’s nice to see BMW is willing to share the wealth in the States. To that end, 30 lucky Bimmerphiles can get their mitts on one of the 2011 Frozen Gray M3 Coupes when orders begin this Monday, June 21st.

What’s so special about the unimaginatively named Frozen Gray M3? To begin with, the exterior is an exclusive matte finish combining a Space Gray base and BMW’s ColorSystem silk matte clear coat. If that’s not enough to get you interested in plunking down $77,600 (including destination and gas guzzler tax), the red Novillo leather and Competition Package – comprised of a 10mm lower ride height, unique 19-inch wheels, a revised M Dynamic Mode and Electronic Damping Control – make this limited-edition M3 more compelling.

Output from the 4.0-liter V8 remains unchanged at 414 horsepower, with grunt being sent to BMW’s M Double Clutch Transmission to net a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds. If you’re interested in rowing your own, a six-speed manual is available, but you’ll sacrifice two-tenths of a second in the sprint to 60.

There’s plenty of other kit included in the package, so make the jump for all the details and get ready to dial BMW’s dedicated 800-number at 11:30 AM EST on Monday to place your order.

Report: BMW 1 Series sales halted pending recall for fire risk

According to dealer documents obtained by Consumer Reports, BMW has instructed dealers to stop delivery of 1 Series models built between January and May of 2010 due to a fire risk.

The documents cites insufficient clearance between the B-pillar and the seat belt tensioners, which, in the event of a crash, could result in friction, leading to overheating and a potential fire.

In addition to the aforementioned 2010 models, certain 2008-2011 1 Series coupes could be affected by the issue. Owners can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 for more details and to see if their vehicle falls under the recall.
