With Little Fanfare Comes the Transit Connect EV from Ford

August 6th, 2010

With all the hype surrounding the pending launch of the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf electric cars, Ford’s Transit Connect EV has gone almost unnoticed. It’s easy to see why. When the van goes on sale later this year, it will sell primarily to commercial fleets. In the car business, there are few things less sexy than commercial vans.

Still, Ford and Azure Dynamics, the company that engineered the electric drive system for the car, may be onto something. Companies like AT&T, which has agreed to buy a few Transit Connect EVs, have drivers motoring around all day in stop-and-go traffic. They burn a lot of fuel even though they travel fewer than 50 miles in a day, says Curt Huston, Chief Operating Officer of Azure. Since the Transit Connect EV can go about 80 miles on a charge, their needs are mostly met. The van has a 28 kilowatt-hour battery that takes six to eight hours to charge and has a top speed of 75 mph. The Leaf can go 100 miles on a charge, but it’s a compact car. This is a small deliver van. For range, the Volt beats both since it can go 40 miles on electric drive and another 300 miles once the gasoline engine kicks in and starts charging the battery. Again, it’s a small car. The Transit Connect will appeal to business owners.

Commercial fleet owners can install a charging station in the garage and get the vans juiced up overnight before heading out the next day. It’s actually a great application. Huston says the fuel savings should return the added cost of an EV in four or five years. Unlike some of the startup EV companies, Azure partnered with Ford. That means vehicle owners can take them to a Ford dealer for service. The company will have 75 dealers to start and may add more later on.

If it takes off, building sales volume through fleet sales can help drive down the cost of the technology and make electric cars more affordable in the future. There is one catch to the whole plan. The price has to be right. Ford and Azure have not set a price yet. Commercial buyers will look at the car purely on a fuel cost savings basis. It’s dollars and cents. If the car costs too much, they won’t see the savings at the pump that they want as quickly as they want it, says Jim Hall, principal of consulting firm 2953 Analytics in Birmingham, Mich. The car also won’t appeal to environmentalists and technology buffs the way a Volt or Leaf will. But for what its target buyer wants, Azure’s Transit Connect may be the right idea.

Report: Chevrolet dealer ready to charge $20,000 over MSRP for Volt… will more follow?

August 2nd, 2010

2011 Chevrolet Volt – Click above for high-res image gallery

Researchers from Edmunds decided to drop their local Chevrolet dealer a line to inquire about staking a claim for one of the first available Volts, and the response was shocking at best and galling at worst. Here’s the email, sans names:

Hello *****

Thank you for your online request, as you know the Volt is going to be a very limited production vehicle for the first 2-3 years. Demand is going to far exceed supply for this vehicle, initially our asking price for the Volt is going to be MSRP plus $20,000, we are expecting only receive 9 Volts all of next year.

I will keep you in my customer base for when the Volt comes out and I will contact you with any information as I receive it. We are taking orders right now for the Volt, if you would like more information, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help you. Thank you.

***** *****, Internet Specialist
******* Chevrolet
********, CA

You read that right. A $20k markup over MSRP for a 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

As Edmunds’ AutoObserver points out, this email exchange took place before General Motors announced its plans to increase Volt production by 50% for 2011, churning out approximately 45,000 units in its first year. But even with that knowledge, would the unnamed dealer still avoid bilking early adopters? We doubt it.

While it’s not clear if any other Chevy dealers plan to follow suit, history would suggest that big markups are likely – the Corvette ZR1 initiated this sort of fervor when it was announced, too. On the flip side of the coin, AO sites a report from GM-Volt.com this past June, in which a GM spokesperson is quoted as saying: “We also aren’t expecting our dealers to overcharge anyone for this vehicle, either, and will monitor the situation closely when we launch,” adding, “we’ll be paying close attention when the vehicle launches and do our best to strongly discourage this kind of behavior, as we always do with any GM-branded vehicle.”

GM is allowing Volt buyers to lease the plug-in hybrid for $350 a month (with a $2,500 down payment) when sales begin later this year, so it strikes us as odd that someone would choose to purchase a Volt outright if the dealer would tack on such an astronomical amount to the MSRP. Then again, there’s the possibility that dealers might only allow purchases, negating the option to lease.

With so much riding on the Volt’s success – from GM’s long-term environmental program to the political pressures over the federal bailout – the General better get its dealers in line post-haste. If not, the fallout has the potential to stymie the Volt’s success before the first owner takes delivery.

Chevrolet Volt Fatigue Setting In

July 30th, 2010

The Chevrolet Volt may be wearing out its welcome. General Motors has been hyping the gasoline-electric car ever since the company showed it off to the public 1,300 days ago. The company has let countless reporters into its battery labs and given interviews with its engineers, all in a very credible attempt to show that GM has smart people with good ideas. And it has worked. GM has picked up some technological credibility and fostered goodwill with the environmental crowd.

Now that GM is finally, after three and a half years, getting close to selling one, the commentariat is taking shots at the Volt. In an editorial in the New York Times today, Truth About Cars Editor Edward Niedermeyer panned the car as “GM’s Electric Lemon.” He criticized the car for, among other things, having bland styling and because it will likely lose GM money. Before that, “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, a well-known car buff, also took a shot at the Volt’s styling, telling the Detroit news that, “if you didn’t know, you might think it’s a Cobalt or a Camry.”

What gives? It could be a case of Volt fatigue. Sure, documenting the tale of the car’s development gave GM a great story to tell. But in the past few months the company has amped up the noise on a car that has been hyped for years. I count 14 press releases on the Volt since June, including an announcement today that GM will boost 2012 production from 30,000 to 45,000. Some of those releases were absolutely necessary, like vital information on pricing, warranty and ordering options. Others were less weighty, such as a release saying that the car can get water under the hood without the electronics going haywire. Another details a test that proves dust won’t get in the car or affect its vitals while driving. The Volt goes on sale in November. At this point, it’s probably time to just market the car to consumers.

Spy Shots: 556-hp Supercharged 2012 Camaro Z28

July 23rd, 2010

It’s been rumored for far too long, and now it’s finally coming into focus. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 has been caught by the long lens of Priddy & Co., complete with ultra-wide tires, a revised exhaust, intimidating hood bulge and a sizable front splitter. But how do we know what’s under the hood?

The shooters caught the high-po Camaro with its passenger door open, and stuck on the plastic dash is a piece of paper that reads “2012 Chevrolet Camaro, 6.2L SC V8, 6AT.” Break that down and it means the Z/28 is packing the same 6.2-liter supercharged V8 LSA fitted to the 556-horsepower Cadillac CTS-V, mated to a six-speed automatic. Naturally, a proper manual will be available as well when the Z/28 goes on sale sometime next year.

Video: Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge provides spills, chills and WTFs

The Grand-Am Cup has changed names more times than Prince, but the series remains largely the same. Two classes run in the Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge – Grand Sport (GS) and Street Tuner (ST) – the former comprised of Porsche 911s, Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaros (among others), with the latter covering everything from Honda Civics to Mini Coopers and Subaru Imprezas.

Depending on the event, both classes run at the same time, which can make for some entertaining action. Such was the case at last month’s race at Mid-Ohio, where Joey Atterbury and his Camaro fought tooth-and-nail in the GS class. The on-track antics had us screaming expletives for the better part of three minutes. Find out why by clicking on the jump.

Chevy or Chevrolet? Who Cares

June 12th, 2010

There’s corporate silliness. And then there’s what happened at Chevy, er, Chevrolet this week. Chevrolet sales vice president Alan Batey and marketing vice president Jim Campbell sent a memo to employees asking that they talk about the brand as Chevrolet, not its shortened nickname Chevy, according to a New York Times report. They want the brand to be consistent, especially since General Motors is trying to push Chevrolet in global markets where some people may not know it as Chevy. The story took on a life of its own, with some observers thinking that Chevrolet way trying to ban the use of the nickname “Chevy.”

GM has since backed away from that internal memo saying that Chevy is the brand’s beloved nickname. “We’re proud of it,” Batey said in a phone interview. “It’s great.” He said GM’s global colleagues were looking for clarity on the brand. Here in the U.S., people can call it Chevy. But around the globe, Batey wants to see it consistently called Chevrolet over time.

This all seems like much ado about nothing. Even if GM wanted to ditch the Chevy nickname, Americans won’t care. They will call it Chevy just as they have for decades. The fact is, GM may legally own its brand names, but the company doesn’t own the Chevrolet or Chevy names in the popular imagination. Not here, not overseas. The brand’s customers and fans do. If Chevy or Chevrolet buyers in China or the U.S. or Russia want to call it Chevy, let them do it. So long as they are happy with their cars, GM shouldn’t care. Given the fact that GM is trying to rejuvenate interest in its brands–especially Chevrolet, which is 72% of its U.S. sales this year–the company should be happy that consumers care enough to give the brand a nickname. The message ought to be, “call us whatever you want, just call us.”

Report: General Motors wants to snuff out “Chevy” nickname [w/poll]

June 10th, 2010

Bowtie

Folks, there are bad ideas, and there ones that are legendary in their badness. Unfortunately for General Motors, it would appear that the automaker may very well be lobbying for its own wing in the Dumb Idea Hall of Fame. The New York Times reports that a memo distributed to workers at the company’s headquarters earlier this week instructs them to cease referring to the Chevrolet brand by its long-standing nickname, Chevy. Going forward, only Chevrolet is to be used. The reasoning? So-called branding consistency. If you’re thinking, “That’s insane,” well, we don’t blame you.

It gets better.

The Times further points out that the memo, signed by Chevy marketing vice president Jim Campbell (you see what we did there) and Alan Batey, VP of Chevy sales and service (there we go again), uses Coke – Coke – as an example of what GM is trying to achieve with this approach. It would seem that the powers-that-be at the RenCen are oblivious to the irony that Coke is, of course, shorthand for the company’s formal name, Coca-Cola.

In a nutshell, we feel that the Coke comparison GM uses in the memo is ultimately rather apt, given that the idea of memory-holing “Chevy” as part of some absurd branding exercise seems destined to be a failure on the level of New Coke. GM’s got its work cut out for itself, regardless. As of right now, Chevrolet.com has 5,480 “Chevy” mentions on it according to Google. GM.com? 1,730 more. That Chevy is inextricably tied to Chevrolet is a reality GM’s marketers are apparently divorced from.

We can’t be the only ones who think this is perhaps the very worst in a long history of horrible ideas… So, what’s your take? Hit the jump and have your say in our poll. Thanks to CpuYoda for the tip!

Making a mockery of the new Chevrolet Camaro "Convertible"

March 18th, 2010
2010 Chevy Camaro Mock-Top
That’s no Camaro Convertible. It’s a horror show. – Click above for image gallery

Autoblog reader Joe Lopez spied what looked to be a Chevrolet Camaro Convertible prototype out on the street. Jazzed about his sighting, he trailed the car as it pulled into a local Detroit-area Target store. Camera in hand, he moved in for pics. That’s likely when the sheer horror of the situation before him struck with the force of a Toyota Prius driven by Jim Sikes.

This was no Camaro Convertible.

Someone had done the unthinkable (and yet, at the same time, inevitable): They had fitted a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro LS with a fabric mock top. Joe’s no dummy. He took the photos anyway, and posted them on his blog, 5thGenCamaro. Then he emailed us, so here we are.

As we all know, tastes vary. That established, in our books, at least, mock tops are only moderately less revolting than the ill-advised landau roof. As you can see, this is one of the more super-classy installations, including false roof bows and a ring of tonneau snaps – because those really scream modernity. The shark fin roof antenna poking through the fabric is the proverbial cherry atop this turd sundae.

As you’ll see in the gallery below, there’s a real convertible – a Chrysler Sebring – parked to the Camaro’s right. We believe we can confidently say that this is the only time a Chrysler Sebring actually looks better to us than a new Chevy Camaro. And that, friends, is frightening. If it were a Buick Lacrosse – even the new one – we probably wouldn’t care. It’d almost… belong. But this? Who does this? Click on the gallery below, then avert your eyes. Thanks for the indigestion pics, Joe!

Chevy Camaro Convertible

Chevrolet Camaro Convertible – Visit Camaro5.com for additional photos

GM’s obviously thrilled with the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro’s success, as it’s pretty much owned the Ford Mustang on the sales charts to this point. Now, the retooled Mustang hopes to bounce back with new powertrains aimed at erasing any performance advantage the Camaro model has. File that battle under “To Be Continued.” The other thing the Mustang has going for it, however, is that sunseekers can opt for a ragtop variant. As in, today. Chevy fans? Not so much.

The waiting game continues apace, however, as the Camaro Convertible inches closer to showrooms. The latest good news comes from Camaro5.com, where a contributor nabbed the droptop Camaro out testing with its roof down – the first such sighting. We think it’s a looker, just like its fixed-roof sibling, and better still, with the top stowed, all the visibility compromises the coupe has to make in the name of its wicked curb appeal are summarily erased. This is one ride we’re definitely looking forward to. For additional photos, make tracks over to Camaro5.com.
