Domestics do well again, Toyota and Honda falter

Many automakers had a positive month of sales in July, particularly the domestics, with Ford Motor Company up 3.11 percent, Chrysler Group up 4.96 percent and General Motors topping the charts with its four core brands up an impressive 24.58 percent to lead all automakers. Even with the loss of four marques (Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer and Saab), GM managed to outsell the company’s entire portfolio of eight brands from last July by 5.41 percent. Of course, The General’s sales weren’t exactly setting the charts on fire last summer (they were down 19 percent compared to July 2008), so the bar was set low.

Something you can’t see in our table below is what appears to be a developing shift away from small and mid-size cars to trucks and CUVs in the marketplace. Blame the shift in consumer tastes to pent-up demand for utility vehicles, higher used car prices and, as always, lower gas prices. Still, we can’t help but cringe at the site of large vehicles, be they trucks, SUVs or CUVs, selling well, knowing that gas prices are cyclical and another spike in the price of oil could be right around the corner.

Interestingly, this shift comes as America’s small car segment is enjoying more new products than any time in recent memory, with a raft of compelling fresh models from Ford, Chevrolet, Mazda and others hitting the marketplace. These brands would appear to be well-placed to meet the demand for small cars if fuel prices rise precipitously, but any automaker in the business of selling economy cars is going to need strong, steady demand if it hopes to make money on what are historically very low (or no) margin models.

UPDATE: A few of you have reminded us that July 1, 2009 was the beginning of the U.S. government’s Car Allowance Rebate System, or Cash for Clunkers program as the people called it. One side effect of the program was that sales of smaller, more fuel efficient cars was artificially boosted while the program was running. While we still don’t discount the steady price of gasoline and other factors contributing to increased sales of larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs, the Cash for Clunkers program helps explain why sales of many popular small cars appear to have taken a nose dive last month.

Here are just a few examples that illustrate the shift that might be happening in consumer taste towards larger vehicles:

2011 Honda CR-Z goes on sale August 24, starting at $19,200

We’ve driven the 2011 CR-Z and now Honda’s slapped a sticker on its hybrid hatch before sales begin August 24.

The CR-Z is available in three trim levels, with the base price of the six-speed manual-equipped model coming in at $19,200 (plus a D&D charge of $750). Option up for the EX and a 360-watt stereo, Bluetooth integration and a leather wrapped wheel are yours for the taking for $20,760. Tack on the navigation system (“Navi” in Honda parlance) and the price swells to $22,560.

If you absolutely must – and we’d seriously advise against it – you can equip the CR-Z with the CVT for $650, complete with seven faux ratios and a slight boost in fuel economy. Make the jump for the details and a complete pricing breakdown.

Hyundai pledges to hit 40 mpg with 2012 Veloster, beat out Honda CR-Z

At a media breakfast in Los Angeles this morning, Hyundai Motor America president John Krafcik let slip that the Korean automaker expects to breach the 40 miles-per-gallon barrier with its forthcoming small sports coupe. Conveniently, if they can reach that performance target, that would best the new 2011 Honda CR-Z, which, despite its hybrid powertrain, achieves just 36/39 city/highway when equipped with a CVT and 31/37 with a manual gearbox. The as-yet-unnamed Hyundai coupe (the nameplates Veloster and Tiburon are still up for discussion) will achieve those figures with a conventional four-cylinder engine, eschewing the added cost, complexity and weight of a gas-electric system.

Likening the forthcoming model to a long-distance runner, Krafcik promises that not only will this Hyundai best the Honda in fuel economy, it will also deliver better performance as well as added utility (read: rear seats and better access). Given that it won’t have the cost penalty of a hybrid drivetrain (a 140-horsepower, 1.6-liter engine is expected), we’d be surprised if it doesn’t come in at a lower price-point, as well.

In addition to sipping gas, Krafcik emphasized to Autoblog that a key mission for the affordable coupe will be enticing the world’s young and increasingly auto-ambivalent consumers with additional technology – all Velosters will come with a large screen on the dashboard as standard equipment, presumably to manage connectivity features in addition to more traditional vehicle functions.

With 40 mpg practicality and superior utility, it would appear that the Veloster not only has a shot at taking on Honda’s CR-Z, but also more conventional economy cars like the Ford Fiesta, perhaps trading a bit of practicality in favor of edgier coupe styling and (hopefully) greater performance.

Let’s get this out of the way right now: the 2011 Honda CR-Z is not a CRX redux. To compare the two – no matter how much Honda may want to – is to misunderstand the former and besmirch the latter.

No, the hybrid CR-Z is an entirely different beast. Despite its three-door shape and two-seat configuration, it has about as much in common with the O.G. hatch as a big-screen remake of your favorite childhood TV show. The basic components are there, but the whole concept has been throttled to within an inch of its life with high-tech gadgetry, odd casting decisions and a questionable demographic.

But to Honda’s credit, its rhetorical comparisons to the CRX have died down considerably since the CR-Z debuted in concept form and then progressed into a production model. Honda may have recognized after a lukewarm introduction outside the U.S. that glomming onto nostalgia will only get you so far (see: Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro). And to make something special – a vehicle that transcends the emotional baggage of its predecessor – you’ve got to evolve the concept and avoid relying on rose-tinted sentimentality.

To an extent, that’s exactly what Honda has created. It hasn’t built another hot hatch – the lightweight, K20-powered three-door enthusiasts crave – and instead it has attempted to meld the technology of the moment into a greenified competitor to the Mini Cooper. Think of it as the rogue lovechild of the original and current Insight, with a few sporting genes spliced into its DNA. But can a hybrid hatch be an entertaining steer? We took to California’s twisties and clipped a few cones to find out.

Its introduction was a case study in how to bungle an automotive social media campaign. Badly. It had people running for thesauruses to find new and fascinating synonyms for “ugly.” Its TV campaign has something to do with jazz music and animals. And yet, for all the hubbub, hysterics and lamentations that Honda had completely lost its mind, the 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour quietly showed up and began finding customers.

Last month – its best sales performance to date – 2,587 people drove the odd-looking hatchwagon home. Recently, we took delivery of our own Crosstour EX-L tester, loaded-up with all-wheel drive and navigation, to see how we felt about spending a week with Honda’s latest experiment.

The current Honda Odyssey is widely considered to be the best of its breed, but let’s face facts: it’s old. Toyota has upped its game with the new Sienna; Nissan is on hiatus, preparing to spring an all-new Quest; and Chrysler continues to do its thing with the Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. Oh, there’s also the Volkswagen Routan, but no one’ll hold it against you for forgetting it exists.

Anyway, Honda’s readying the next-gen Odyssey for release sometime later this year. We’ve already gotten a near-production preview in the form of the “concept” version introduced in Chicago and presently sitting on the floor at the New York Auto Show. Now, thanks to reader Bernardo Roque, we’ve got a few new spy shots of the next-gen van out testing in Las Vegas. One photo gives a peek at the interior via the open driver’s door and tailgate, but it’s still too far away to see anything in useful detail. What is obvious is that this thing is otherwise fundamentally identical to the so-called Odyssey Concept.

We’ll go out on a limb and guess that the 2011 Honda Odyssey is roomier, more powerful and/or more fuel-efficient than the current van, with a better interior and enough cupholders to service an entire preschool. Maybe two. Whether Honda will step up and offer all-wheel drive remains a mystery, but that’s the one thing Toyota holds over all its competitors’ heads right now. That’s gotta irk someone on the Big H’s org chart. We’re actually looking forward to seeing the finished product. Yeah, we just said that about a minivan. Sue us. Many thanks, Bernardo.

How does an automaker take a model that’s been largely unchanged since inception and give it a little juice seven years into its life cycle? If you’re Honda, you go to the dogs. Literally. After unveiling it as a “concept” at the 2009 New York Auto Show, the Dog Friendly Honda Element accessory package has made the transition to production. The theory is that if you’re a dog lover, you might consider buying an Element geared specifically toward those needs.

The Big H has plenty of experience in this department. As we showed you earlier today, in Japan there’s a dedicated Honda Dog website (it’s incredible, really) loaded with info about transporting pups in basically every JDM Honda offering. Naturally, there are “Travel Dog” accessories that drivers can purchase for each car as well. In fact, in Japan, there’s also a dedicated model, the Vamos Travel Dog, which is specifically outfitted with dog owners in mind – much like the Stateside-market Elements kitted out with the new Dog Friendly gear. As luck would have it, I have two dogs. Hence, I, and they, will be your humble 2010 Honda Element (Dog Friendly!) evaluators. Get your paws over to the jump to read more.

Honda Japan’s oddly compelling and inherently fascinating Honda Dog website includes useful consumer tidbits such as a visual guide to how well your poodle will fit in the CR-Z’s front passenger seat. (Before you start yelling how it’s the only passenger seat, know that in Japan, the CR-Z is a 2+2.)

That’s not all, however. There’s stuff to entertain as well, including a whole page of desktop wallpapers featuring Hondas with various dogs that you can find below. Seriously. Vintage stuff, too.
