Edge Of Perfection: Stafford SK Mod Win Puts Keith Rocco One Victory From NASCAR National Championship

August 13th, 2010

STAFFORD – What was just a joke made in jest last year by Keith Rocco is seemingly on the cusp of becoming stunning reality.

Keith Rocco Eyes 7-17-10.jpgIn 2007, 2008 and 2009 Rocco looked late in each season to be one of the top contenders to win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship. Each year his chances dissolved in the final weeks of the season.

Under the Whelen All-American Series national points system drivers in the premier division at short tracks across the country are ranked based on their 18 best finishes of the season to figure out a national champion. Eighteen victories for a driver in full fields (at least 20 cars) represents a perfect season.

Keith Rocco Looking To Reach NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Perfection This Weekend

August 11th, 2010

The number of victories are maxed out for Keith Rocco, now comes the time to clean up the numbers and make them perfect.

Keith Rocco Mug.jpgNASCAR’s ranking system for the Whelen All-American Series national short track standings ranks a driver on their 18 best finishes of the season.

The eighteen best NASCAR Whelen All-American Series finishes for Rocco in 2010 have one thing common: They’re all victories.

Rocco’s win at the Waterford Speedbowl Saturday night was his ninth of the season at the shoreline oval and 18th overall between Waterford, Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson International Speedway.

Woody Pitkat Holds Off Eric Berndt To Take SK Modified Checkered At Stafford Motor Speedway

August 6th, 2010

STAFFORD – Woody Pitkat was apologetic, though hardly regretful.

Thumbnail image for Woody Pitkat SMS Pit Party 5-1-10.jpgSome timely defensive driving to keep Eric Berndt at bay was enough for Pitkat to find victory lane in the 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway.

On two occasions late in the race, Berndt looked to have found a way to get under Pitkat at the front, but each time Pitkat put the blocks on to keep Berndt behind.

Possible Perfect Season Back In Focus For Keith Rocco; Now Three Victories Short Of National Championship

August 3rd, 2010

Keith Rocco has gone from wondering if he would ever win again to having a perfect NASCAR Whelen All-American Series actually in view of possible completion by the end of this week.

Keith Rocco Mug.jpgPossible being the key word.

The stars would have to align perfectly for Rocco this week, and he himself could still make a decision that would make it an impossible feat.

Rocco, of Wallingford, broke a nearly month-long winless slump by stealing victory in dramatic style in last Saturday’s 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Rocco went from third to first on a restart with two laps remaining Saturday for his 17th SK Modified win of the season between Waterford, Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson International Speedway. Saturday’s victory was his first in an SK Modified since July 3.

Thompson Speedway Tiregate: In Dispute With Officials, Keith Rocco Wants To Know When Is A Start Not A Start

July 30th, 2010

STAFFORD – For race teams, finding speed on the racetrack is the paramount goal, but sometimes it seems that finding loopholes and gray areas in the rulebook comes up a very close second against the search for speed.

Keith Rocco Eyes 7-17-10.jpgAnd it seems the brewing battle between Thompson International Speedway race officials and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national points leader involves just that dancing in the gray of rulebook wordings.

Rocco, of Wallingford, skipped Thursday night’s event at Thompson because of a dispute with officials over a track tire inventory rule issue.

Ted Christopher Ready To Teach Ryan Preece At Lesson In Track Manners After SK Mod Race At Thompson

July 29th, 2010

THOMPSON – Ted Christopher said he took his time getting to the front of the pack in Thursday’s 30-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature at Thompson International Speedway, but that trek to the front didn’t come without its problems, namely in the form of Ryan Preece.

10 Ted Christopher.jpgAfter celebrating his seventh SK Modified victory in 11 events this year at Thompson, Christopher had little nice to say about the driving tactics of Preece in Thursday’s feature and it was hardly pleasantries for Christopher being offered by Preece either.

Between laps 10-15 Christopher and Preece waged a heated battle for third place on the track that offered some contact, some cross-over’s, some wash-ups and a few cut-offs.

Christopher was steaming over Preece’s tactics after arriving in the inspection area at Thompson following the win.

Dispute With Track Officials Keeps National Points Leader Keith Rocco Away From Thompson Speedway Thursday

July 29th, 2010

THOMPSON – With his closest pursuer in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship chase closing in, it was the perfect night for Keith Rocco to go hunting for a victory at Thompson International Speedway.

Rocco Close Thompson.jpgRocco is in desperate need of SK Modified feature victories in full-field events (20 cars or more), though getting full fields at Thompson this year has been a rarity.

But on the night that 20 cars are in the paddock for the event, Rocco’s car isn’t one of them.

And he said he might not be back.

“It’s not because I wanted to skip the race” Rocco said. “I’m just trying to prove a point.”

Rocco is in a dispute with track officials over tire rule inventory rules. On July 15 Rocco had mechanical issues just before the start of the SK Modified feature at the track and didn’t take the green flag to start the event.

Keith Rocco’s Lead At The Top Of Whelen All-American Series National Short Track Standings Continues To Slim

July 28th, 2010

The month of July hasn’t been friendly to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national points leader Keith Rocco.

Keith Rocco Eyes 7-17-10.jpgRocco, of Wallingford, had 14 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified victories through the first three months of the season, but has recorded just two victories in the month of the July, and the lack of trips to victory lane for Rocco is beginning to show in a big way in his lead at the top of the standings.

Riding To The Top: Tyler Chadwick Wins First Of The Season In SK Modifieds At The Waterford Speedbowl

July 17th, 2010

WATERFORD – The podium has been a familiar place for Tyler Chadwick this year at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Tyler Chadwick 7-17-10.jpgUnfortunately for the Ledyard driver, he’s been a lot more familiar with the bottom end of that podium than the top in 2010. Coming into Saturday night, Chadwick had recorded five third place finishes in the first 12 weeks of racing at the Speedbowl.

Saturday he clawed his way to the top.

Chadwick, of Ledyard, held off Todd Ceravolo of Gales Ferry to win the 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature at Waterford.
