August 7th, 2010

WATERFORD – It was a change of luck that Richard Staskowski welcomed gratefully.

Jason Palmer Speedbowl 8-7-10.jpgMore often than he’s liked, Staskowski has gotten caught up in the mistakes and mayhem of others on the track in the Late Model division at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Saturday was Staskowski’s chance to take advantage.

When the battle for the lead went overboard between Vin Esposito and Jason Palmer it was Staskowski who proved the beneficiary, inheriting the top spot and then driving to victory in the 30-lap Late Model division feature.

Short Pitting: Trying To Figure Out Mark Martin, Translating The Coverage, Treading On The Nerves Of Fans

August 5th, 2010

Another edition of The Backstretch’s semi-regular concoction, brewed of the meatiest newsworthy items, opinions and meaningless meanderings down some paths that might not have anything to do with racing. Strap in for the ride.

10 Mark Martin.jpgSo Mark Martin feels disrespected by the media because they continue to ask him where he’ll be next year despite the fact that he continues to insist he’ll still be in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports car.

Sorry Mark, but you made your bed when it comes to the media having to continually speculate on questions surrounding what you may by doing at any point in your career.

Remember when you retired Mark?

You remember that retirement tour, when you sold the fans all that nice retirement tour merchandise, put a bunch of cash in your pocket, and then promptly un-retired?

Elliott Sadler’s Vicious Pocono Wreck Shows NASCAR’s Proactive Safety Efforts Still Direly Lacking

August 2nd, 2010

As long as the hazardous mess that is the Pocono Raceway remains unchanged, not a single soul in any role of power within NASCAR can say that safety in the sport is of any paramount concern to the sanctioning body.

Sprint Cup Series.jpgIt hardly takes someone educated in safety engineering to understand that having an earth mound wall covered by a steel barrier just feet from the track – jutting out oppositely to the flow of traffic on a high speed are of the racing surface – might just be a dangerous idea.

And yet how many years have NASCAR officials just looked past the area as a Pocono Raceway quirk?

July 24th, 2010

STAFFORD – Don’t call the folks from PETA just yet.

Laughing Clown Car LeMons 2010.jpgNo, those live chickens in the cage strapped to the roof of that racecar are just for pre-race show and inspection time. As you might understand, the team is a little cocky about their chances in the big event.

Yes, live chickens rolling through the inspection line is just one of the many unique and interesting sights on display this morning in the paddock area at Stafford Motor Speedway, where the 24 Hours of LeMons is set to kick off their first of two days of competition at the track.
