Report: Toyota to kill Sequoia, Tundra redesigned in 2014

At it’s peak in 2002, Toyota was selling over 70,000 Sequoias. Last year, that number dropped to below 20,000 units. So it comes as little surprise that ToMoCo will be nixing its Tundra-based SUV at the end of the current model’s lifecycle.

A source speaking with PickupTrucks.com confirmed that the Sequoia won’t live on, partially due to slow sales, but surely in part to get Toyota’s CAFE ratings in check before the new rules hit in 2015. But all’s not lost for the automaker’s body-on-frame offerings.

A redesigned Tundra is set to arrive in 2014, just in time for Ford, General Motors and Nissan’s newest half-ton pickups. Although sales of the Tundra haven’t lived up to Toyota’s lofty expectations, it’s obvious the automaker feels the need to compete in the segment, and a refreshed model should help sales, despite the market’s less-than-enthusiastic reception of Toyota’s largest pickup.

Report: Jaguar X-Type replacement aims to fight the 3 Series

July 13th, 2010

With the all the news coming out of Jaguar, it’s obvious its Indian parents are intent on making the leaping cat a credible competitor to the world’s luxury automakers. To wit: not only has Jag green-lit the XE – a next-generation XK-based competitor to the Porsche Boxster – it ready to take the fight to the BMW 3 Series in the form of a reborn X-Type.

While the previous Mondeo-based X-Type fared poorly during its run, Tata Motor’s chief executive, Carl-Peter Forster, told Automobilwoche that in order for the British brand to compete on a global scale, a smaller sedan is a requirement. To that end, a new sedan is under development to slot in below the XF, likely utilizing a new aluminum architecture based on its next-generation sedan.

In addition to X-Type replacement and the new, smaller coupe – rumored to arrive in 2012 – Forster says that work is underway on a long-wheelbase version of the XF for the Chinese market and a wagon version of Jag’s mid-size sedan is slated for sale in Europe (XFR estate, anyone?).

On the Land Rover front, the recently revealed Evoque is the first of three new products to debut in the next five years, including an all-new Freelander with seating for seven and a revised Defender which is set to arrive in 2015.

First Drive: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee redefines the Tipping Point

In the span of three years, Chrysler has been bought and sold more times than Duke Cunningham. Its warped “merger of equals” with Daimler ended in 2007 and the disastrous reign of incompetence extended into its relationship with Cerberus Capital Management – now a “bad word” within the hallowed halls of Chrysler, according to one exec.

After filing for bankruptcy in April of 2009, the reformed Chrysler Group partnered with the Italian automaking juggernauts at Fiat and have since rolled out a five-year business plan that’s nothing if not ambitious.

But you didn’t come here for an abbreviated history lesson on Chrysler and its failed suitors. You want to find out how your $6.6 billion in federal funding is being spent and if the company’s products are finally up to snuff. Well, here’s the short version: The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first Chrysler product since the 300 that deserves your attention. Follow the jump to find out why.

Review: 2010 GMC Terrain – a tale of two engines

June 4th, 2010

GMC’s “Professional Grade” tagline works best when it’s being used to upsell truck shoppers into Sierras instead of Chevy Silverados, but even wider mass-market success comes from snaring folks who couldn’t care less about payload. And while the Yukon has its place at the table for some families, the thirsty brontosaur’s broad appeal vanished with the disappearance of super-cheap gasoline. Hence, traditionally truck-focused GMC has crossed over, so to speak. The three-row Acadia was the beginning, and while the trucks are still there for those who want or need them, if you’re shopping for a family car, the nice man in the tie would like to show you something different: the 2010 GMC Terrain.

First Drive: 2011 Audi Q7 downsizes with an upside

2011 Audi Q7 – Click above for high-res image gallery

If there’s to be a singular automotive theme guiding us into this second decade of the 21st century, it’s downsizing. If not in dimensions, then in displacement. Automakers, forced to adhere to higher government-mandated fuel economy standards and lower CO2 emissions, are beginning to collectively reduce engine size while attempting to maintain the thrust consumers demand.

The newest posterchild for this movement comes in an unlikely wrapper: the 2011 Audi Q7. Packing the same supercharged 3.0-liter V6 found in the S4 sports sedan, Audi bids adieu (or is that Auf Wiedersehen?) to the 3.6-liter V6 and 4.2-liter V8 for the 2011 model year and brings with it the 2011 A8′s eight-speed automatic transmission. We tackled the congested highways and byways in and around Ingolstadt to see if the revised Q7 has the goods to placate both bureaucrats and buyers, while taking a deeper look into Audi’s new powertrain strategy. Click through to the jump to see if we can make sense of it all.

Leaked: 2011 Infiniti QX56 drips onto web prior to NY debut

When Nissan unveiled the all-new Patrol SUV in the Middle East last month, we already knew that we’d be seeing the rebranded Infiniti version as the 2011 QX56 at the New York Auto Show. Furthermore, spy photos left little to the imagination. Today, leaked official images leave exactly zero to the imagination.

Despite what appears to be an effort to infuse a dollop of FX style to the front end, the 2011 Infiniti QX56 manages to retain an awkward-looking “forehead” (much like its predecessor) that’s reminiscent of Frankenstein’s monster, thanks to the not-insubstantial amount of bodywork that rises above the headlamps. There’s also a garish fender vent the approximate size of Martha’s Vineyard. While the QX56′s front and rear end treatments are unique to the Infiniti, the basic profile and daylight opening are identical to the new Patrol, as is the lavishly-appointed interior, which appears to just swap steering wheel logos.

Given that we already know the vehicle nomenclature – QX56 – look for the same 5.6-liter, 400-horsepower, 405 pound-foot direct-injected V8 that’s available in the Nissan. Likewise, we expect to see most, if not all, of the same technological features the new Patrol offers, such as its seven-speed automatic transmission, electronic four-wheel-drive with driver-selectable modes, and hydraulic anti-roll system.

Check out the low-res leaked images in the gallery below, which you can compare to our high-res Nissan Patrol set. We’ll have full details in the new 2011 Infiniti QX56 later this week once the festivities get underway in New York.

Review: 2010 Honda Element with Dog Friendly package leaves tails wagging

2010 Honda Element with Dog Friendly Package – Click above for high-res image gallery

How does an automaker take a model that’s been largely unchanged since inception and give it a little juice seven years into its life cycle? If you’re Honda, you go to the dogs. Literally. After unveiling it as a “concept” at the 2009 New York Auto Show, the Dog Friendly Honda Element accessory package has made the transition to production. The theory is that if you’re a dog lover, you might consider buying an Element geared specifically toward those needs.

The Big H has plenty of experience in this department. As we showed you earlier today, in Japan there’s a dedicated Honda Dog website (it’s incredible, really) loaded with info about transporting pups in basically every JDM Honda offering. Naturally, there are “Travel Dog” accessories that drivers can purchase for each car as well. In fact, in Japan, there’s also a dedicated model, the Vamos Travel Dog, which is specifically outfitted with dog owners in mind – much like the Stateside-market Elements kitted out with the new Dog Friendly gear. As luck would have it, I have two dogs. Hence, I, and they, will be your humble 2010 Honda Element (Dog Friendly!) evaluators. Get your paws over to the jump to read more.

GM is shopping (or is that ‘Saab-ing’) Hummer

February 26th, 2010

10c5-Hummer_HX_Concept.jpg

There’s a new verb in the auto vernacular. Saab-ing it. That’s what people inside Hummer and General Motors say they are doing with the menacing-SUV brand now that a tentative deal to sell it to China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Industrial Machinery has fallen through. GM says they will wind Hummer down. Recall over the past several months before closing the sale of Saab to Spyker Cars that GM said a couple of times that a sale was unlikely. They said that they planned to wind it down, thereby putting pressure on any bidder to come up with a cash deal quickly. It worked. So GM is playing a similar game with Hummer. The company says Hummer is in wind down mode, but if a buyer comes along with cash in hand there still could be a sale.

Well, I have another definition of Saab-ing it. GM management has already done it with Hummer. They just didn’t know it. To Saab a car brand means to buy it, give it some initial investment money in the early honeymoon years and then starve it of new models and marketing dollars until it has to either be shuttered or sold. GM spent a pittance on Saab and Hummer marketing in recent years. After the H3 was launched, GM didn’t add anything new. They had a great concept called the HX (pictured above) but it was never built. Both Hummer and Saab were limited to just two models to sell for most of their existence under GM ownership. Nothing in equaled nothing out.

To be fair, Hummer is a tough sell these days. Americans are in a recession-driven period of austerity. Fuel is cheap, but the prospect of a gasoline price spike sits on the consumer’s shoulder like a fat gargoyle. In an era when conspicuous consumption is scorned and consumer confidence is low, Hummer would be a tough sell.

That said, Lamborghini and Ferrari aren’t withering away. A new buyer could take Hummer back to what it was before GM bought it and Saabed it. It could be a niche brand selling expensive, recreational, ultra-rugged suvs that can go anywhere. And by anywhere, I don’t mean the speed bumps in the prep school parking lot. I mean the Dakota Badlands. Remember the H1? Imagine that, only more refined. In other words, it could be to suvs what Ferrari or Lambo are to sports cars, but its new owner can’t Saab it.
