Domestics do well again, Toyota and Honda falter

Many automakers had a positive month of sales in July, particularly the domestics, with Ford Motor Company up 3.11 percent, Chrysler Group up 4.96 percent and General Motors topping the charts with its four core brands up an impressive 24.58 percent to lead all automakers. Even with the loss of four marques (Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer and Saab), GM managed to outsell the company’s entire portfolio of eight brands from last July by 5.41 percent. Of course, The General’s sales weren’t exactly setting the charts on fire last summer (they were down 19 percent compared to July 2008), so the bar was set low.

Something you can’t see in our table below is what appears to be a developing shift away from small and mid-size cars to trucks and CUVs in the marketplace. Blame the shift in consumer tastes to pent-up demand for utility vehicles, higher used car prices and, as always, lower gas prices. Still, we can’t help but cringe at the site of large vehicles, be they trucks, SUVs or CUVs, selling well, knowing that gas prices are cyclical and another spike in the price of oil could be right around the corner.

Interestingly, this shift comes as America’s small car segment is enjoying more new products than any time in recent memory, with a raft of compelling fresh models from Ford, Chevrolet, Mazda and others hitting the marketplace. These brands would appear to be well-placed to meet the demand for small cars if fuel prices rise precipitously, but any automaker in the business of selling economy cars is going to need strong, steady demand if it hopes to make money on what are historically very low (or no) margin models.

UPDATE: A few of you have reminded us that July 1, 2009 was the beginning of the U.S. government’s Car Allowance Rebate System, or Cash for Clunkers program as the people called it. One side effect of the program was that sales of smaller, more fuel efficient cars was artificially boosted while the program was running. While we still don’t discount the steady price of gasoline and other factors contributing to increased sales of larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs, the Cash for Clunkers program helps explain why sales of many popular small cars appear to have taken a nose dive last month.

Here are just a few examples that illustrate the shift that might be happening in consumer taste towards larger vehicles:

Honda Civic: -25.5% (23,231)
Honda Pilot: 45.4% (9,570)

Toyota Prius: -29.2% (14,102)
Toyota Sequoia: 50.5% (1,233)

BREAKING: Toyota to recall 373,000 2000-2004 Avalon sedans in U.S. over faulty steering locks

Toyota Motor Corporation’s recall woes have resurfaced today with official word that the company will recall some 373,000 second-generation Toyota Avalon models built between the 2000 and 2004 model years.

According to the Japanese automaker, the full-size sedans’ steering lock bars can crack, eventually leading to a break. If that failure occurs, the steering column interlock system can become difficult to unlock when parked, potentially disabling the vehicle. Worse, if the driver is in a right-hand turn with “sufficient lateral acceleration,” under very specific conditions, the damaged lock bar can actually engage, locking the steering wheel and disabling steering control of the vehicle, a condition that increases the likelihood of an accident.

For its part, Toyota says it is unaware of any crashes stemming from the Avalon’s steering interlock issue, and it will replace the steering column bracket in affected vehicles for free. The complete press release is available after the jump.

Report: Toyota to kill Sequoia, Tundra redesigned in 2014

July 27th, 2010

2010 Toyota Sequoia – Click above for high-res image gallery

At it’s peak in 2002, Toyota was selling over 70,000 Sequoias. Last year, that number dropped to below 20,000 units. So it comes as little surprise that ToMoCo will be nixing its Tundra-based SUV at the end of the current model’s lifecycle.

A source speaking with PickupTrucks.com confirmed that the Sequoia won’t live on, partially due to slow sales, but surely in part to get Toyota’s CAFE ratings in check before the new rules hit in 2015. But all’s not lost for the automaker’s body-on-frame offerings.

A redesigned Tundra is set to arrive in 2014, just in time for Ford, General Motors and Nissan’s newest half-ton pickups. Although sales of the Tundra haven’t lived up to Toyota’s lofty expectations, it’s obvious the automaker feels the need to compete in the segment, and a refreshed model should help sales, despite the market’s less-than-enthusiastic reception of Toyota’s largest pickup.

Followup: Toyota says "We’re not implying that everything is driver error, absolutely not."

July 15th, 2010

That’s the word from Toyota spokesperson Mike Michels on the automaker’s investigation of some 2,000 vehicles reported to suffer from unintended acceleration.

Speaking with The New York Times, Michels said that a small amount of Toyota vehicles had issues with sticking accelerators, while a large number of the cases involved the previously recalled floor mats interfering with the pedals. However, he notes, none of these cases have resulted in a crash.

More importantly, and seemingly in-line with The Wall Street Journal’s earlier report that human error was likely the cause of most unintended acceleration claims, Michels says “in instances where they reported having their foot on the brake pedal, there is very clear evidence that this is pedal misapplication.”

Toyota says that its investigation into all the cases of unintended acceleration remains ongoing, and for its part, NHTSA continues to claim that it has reached “no conclusions” about the causes.

Report: WSJ unintended acceleration story "planted" by Toyota

July 15th, 2010

When The Wall Street Journal reported that crash data obtained by the U.S. Department of Transportation pegged the blame for Toyota’s unintended acceleration on drivers, one line stuck out:

“A NHTSA spokeswoman declined to comment on the findings, which haven’t been released by the agency.”

With no official word from the DOT or NHTSA on its findings in the case, the WSJ‘s sources have been called into question.

According to an unnamed NHTSA spokeswomen speaking with Just-Auto, “The story was planted by Toyota. Toyota is the source – yes we know that for definite [sic]. It is [the] Toyota PR machine. We knew they were going to put it out.”

There’s no doubt Toyota is in close contact with the DOT and NHTSA, so there’s a good chance that Toyota has been privy to the findings ahead of their official release. However, until something official comes down from the Feds, the exact causes of unintended acceleration aren’t simply open and shut.

We’re in the process of contacting both NHTSA and Toyota about the story and will update you as more information is collected.

UPDATE: A NHTSA spokesperson has confirmed that the agency hasn’t released any information to the WSJ, but declined to comment if Toyota has gained advanced access to the agency’s findings.

UPDATE 2: A report by the Detroit Free Press quotes NHTSA Administrator David Strickland as saying that the agency has “several more months of work” to complete before it can definitively come to a conclusion on the cause of unintended acceleration.

UPDATE 3: We’ve asked Toyota’s National Manager for Environmental, Quality, and Safety Communications, John Hanson, if NHTSA has been supplying information to Toyota on its investigation. His response: “It’s been a one-way valve [to NHTSA]. We’ve been supplying information and sending it to NHTSA. We are not aware of any study. We are not aware of any report. We’ve been compiling our own field reports on unintended acceleration and as we investigate them, we send them to NHTSA. The WSJ report was news to us.”

Seat Time with Hiromu Naruse

Hiromu Naruse’s Creations – Click above for image gallery

Last October I had the chance to shake hands with one of my heros. I was attending the launch of the Lexus LFA in Florida and after taking a few hot laps around Homestead, I was offered a ride with Hiromu Naruse, Toyota’s “Master Test Driver” and the man responsible for the automaker’s first and last supercar.

At 66 years old, he put me to shame. Smooth inputs, graceful slides and nearly imperceptible throttle inputs had him lapping the track seconds faster than anyone in attendance. Including one race driver. But the LFA wasn’t his greatest work.

Naruse-san helped create my childhood dream cars. Stapled above my Countach poster and a cutaway of the Acura NSX was a small picture of the Toyota 2000GT carefully snipped out of my first issue of Road & Track. That was his first baby and there were many more to follow.

While most of my Valley-born peers were interested in muscle cars and pickups, I was fawning over the Sprinter Trueno and the original MR2. When the Lexus IS300 showed up in the late ’90s, I scammed my way into one of the first manual models at the local dealer and racked up 30 miles on to the odometer during an elongated “test drive.”

Naruse-san was responsible for all of them, and now he’s gone. One of the few men left at Toyota passionate about driving has exited stage right, and the automotive world stands to be a worse place without him.

BREAKING: Toyota’s chief test driver dies behind wheel of LFA in Germany

According to reports, Toyota‘s chief test driver, 67-year-old Hiromu Naruse, has died in a crash on highway 410 near the famed Nürburgring race track in Germany. He was driving the recently spied Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition (above) at the time of the accident, and reports say he veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with two others test drivers in a BMW. The two BMW test drivers survived the crash, though one is reportedly still in critical condition. German video of the crash scene after the accident took place can be viewed below. Police are investigating the crash and have yet to determine its cause.

Naruse was heavily involved with the development of the Lexus LFA supercar he was driving, along with many other past sports cars from Toyota’s history since he joined the company in 1963. Enthusiasts today call him the “Godfather of the LFA,” though he was involved in the development of sports cars for Toyota going as far back as the storied 2000GT from the late 1960s. The prototype of a special edition version of the LFA that he was driving when the accident occurred was reportedly worth 1.5 million euro.

Report: Toyota FT-86 delayed until 2013, hybrid under consideration

May 26th, 2010

Toyota FT-86 Concept – Click above for high-res image galllery

If a report from Japan’s Best Car is to be believed, Toyota will delay the release of the FT-86 from 2011 to 2013.

The reasons behind the delay are varied, and include a different design direction, the economic slowdown and possibly a revised powertrain strategy that could include some kind of hybrid motivation.

As reported previously, the original FT-86 concept was just that – a design study – and Toyota is apparently second-guessing the styling of the coupe before it reaches production. Additionally, ToMoCo is reportedly gauging the success of the Honda CR-Z, which could influence the final drivetrain specs of the FT-86. If that means a hybrid powerplant is in the cards, we’re not totally heartbroken, but if Toyota decides to remake the coupe as a front-driver, consider our dreams officially dashed. Regardless, the next iteration of the FT-86 is slated to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of 2011.

BREAKING: Governator says Tesla teaming up with Toyota in Cali

May 20th, 2010

Tesla Model S sedan – click above for high-res image gallery

California Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger has apparently let slip ahead of a scheduled 5pm Pacific announcement that Tesla Motors will be teaming up with Toyota to build electric cars.

While some might speculate that the agreement could result in the re-opening of Fremont’s idle New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant (NUMMI), SFGate says that this is somewhat unlikely. Any production agreement will likely involve the forthcoming Model S sedan, and NUMMI’s facilities are significantly larger than what the model will require, as it was originally scaled to accommodate the joint venture between Toyota and General Motors which required much greater capacity. The smart money is on a new factory location, probably in Downey, CA (in Los Angeles County).

It is not yet clear what Toyota will bring to the table or what, if any money or stock is changing hands with this rumored agreement. Also, no word yet on how Mercedes-Benz feels about all this – the German automaker already has a 10 percent stake in the company after opening its coffers to the struggling EV manufacturer back in May of 2009.

More information as it becomes available…
